What is Google Business Profile Score?
A Google Business Profile score measures the completeness and optimisation of your Google Business listing — the single most important factor for appearing in local search results and Google Maps. It evaluates 10 ranking factors: business category accuracy, contact information, opening hours, photo quantity and quality, review management, post frequency, Q&A population, business description, services listing, and attributes. A higher score correlates directly with increased visibility in the local pack — the map-based results that capture 42% of clicks in local searches.
The Formula
GBP Score = Sum of 10 criteria (0 or 10 each, total 100) Local Pack Click Share = f(Profile Completeness, Reviews, Proximity) Review Velocity = New Reviews per Month
Each criterion is evaluated as pass or fail. A complete, actively managed profile scores 80-100. Most local businesses score 30-50 due to neglected photos, posts, and Q&A sections.
Worked Example
A dental practice in Manchester with a basic Google Business Profile: correct category, phone number and address listed, but only 3 photos, no posts, 15 reviews with no responses, empty Q&A, and no services listed.
- Category: "Dentist" set correctly (10/10)
- Contact: Phone, website, and address all present (10/10)
- Hours: Opening hours set but not updated for bank holidays (5/10)
- Photos: Only 3 photos — no interior, team, or treatment room shots (0/10)
- Reviews: 15 reviews at 4.2 stars but zero responses (0/10)
- Posts: No posts ever published (0/10)
- Q&A: Empty — no pre-populated questions (0/10)
- Description: Generic one-line description (0/10)
- Services: No services or treatments listed (0/10)
- Attributes: Wheelchair access and parking not set (0/10)
📌 Initial score: 25/100. After optimisation — adding 15 photos, responding to all reviews, posting weekly, pre-populating 10 Q&As, writing a full description, listing all treatments, and setting attributes — the score rose to 85/100. Within 3 months, the practice saw a 40% increase in Google Maps views and a 25% increase in direction requests.
Why This Matters
Local search ranking
Google Business Profile completeness is the top-weighted factor in local pack rankings. Businesses with complete profiles are 2.7x more likely to be considered reputable and 70% more likely to attract location visits from search results.
Trust signals
A profile with 20+ reviews, recent photos, and regular posts signals an active, trustworthy business. Consumers read an average of 10 reviews before trusting a local business, and 88% trust online reviews as much as personal recommendations.
Click-through rate
Businesses with 10+ photos receive 35% more click-throughs to their website than those with fewer. Adding services, posts, and Q&A content gives Google more reasons to show your listing for relevant local searches.
Common Mistakes
❌ Not responding to reviews
Ignoring reviews — especially negative ones — damages trust and rankings. Responding to every review shows you value customer feedback. A thoughtful response to a negative review often impresses potential customers more than the review itself.
❌ No photos or outdated photos
Businesses with zero photos lose 35% of potential clicks. Upload at least 10 photos covering exterior (so people recognise you), interior, team, and products or services. Update monthly with fresh images.
❌ Wrong or too-broad category
Choosing "Restaurant" instead of "Italian Restaurant" dilutes your relevance for specific searches. Select the most specific primary category and add secondary categories for additional services. Category accuracy is a top-3 local ranking factor.
Industry Benchmarks

One of the most common mistakes we see when working with clients: not responding to reviews. Ignoring reviews — especially negative ones — damages trust and rankings. Responding to every review shows you value customer feedback. A thoughtful response to a negative review often impresses potential customers more than the review itself.
